在馬來西亞沙巴古達的邦宜島附近，曾有一座被稱為「幽靈島」的傳奇地質奇觀——Pulau Batu Hairan（驚異石）。自1897年以來，它在百年內多次毫無預兆地從深海冒出，最長不過維持數年，隨後又悄然沉沒於汪洋。
1988年它最後一次現身，僅如足球場般大小，兩年後便再度回歸虛無。這種由海底泥火山爆發構成的短暫地質現象，在科學上已有解答；然而在人文視野中，這塊「驚異石」的每一次浮沉，都宛如一則巨大的文化隱喻，精準地對應著人類精神世界中的集體潛意識與存在困境。
