荀子在《宥坐》篇中有這麼一句：「主量必平，似法」。意為水必須是平的，就像法度一樣公正。用大水的特性來比喻法度的重要性，說明「量」必須平等，才符合「法」的公正和標凖。

「主」字，原義是火把，「炷」的古字。挺形象的；「王」者（君主）頭上有炷火，不就像畫裏的神佛有光環？

現在，因為荀子這句話，「主」字上那一點，又和「水」扯上關係。

王者頭顱頂那一點可火可水，學習漢文的人假若多發揮想像力，不僅情趣無限，思緒的綿延能召唤廣闊的詩性。…
