他拿出全部的家底,向馬來王族承包了大片山地,搞山林開發。他又以房子為抵押,向銀行貸款,買了四臺推土機,請了一批工人,自己也親自上陣,用推土機開路,伐樹墾地,清理好一片山地就賣給他人搞種植園,接著開發第二片。

每天頂著星光出門,踏著月色歸家,連續苦幹了五六年,不僅還清了銀行貸款,而且有了頗為可觀的資本。他看準了經濟高速發展時期土地的增值潛力,沒有什麽財富比土地更有投資價值了。1989年,他大手筆買下了一百五十吉(一吉相當於六畝)土地,用於種植油棕和橡膠。他從此有了自己的種植園。…

溫錦昌排行第五,六歲時隨父母從彭亨搬到森美蘭。那時所有的膠農和伐木工都住茅寮,他家人多,搭的茅寮是芙蓉鎮最大的。家中的生活十分清苦,孩子們很小就隨父母去割膠,天不亮就出發,父母在前面割,他們睡眼惺忪跟在後面收。茫茫無邊的膠林,前不見頭,後不見尾,膠水仿佛永遠也收不完。

膠農的收入太低,錦昌不願意像父母那樣一輩子困在膠林。1960年,十六歲的他初中畢業了。在母親憂郁的目光中,他決心離家獨自去闖蕩,為了改變自己,也改變全家的命運。他走進了比膠林更遠更深更少人跡的莽莽大森林。…

大批的高州人下南洋,是在20世紀民國初期。那時的高州境域,包括現在的茂名全境,還包括現在湛江的吳川、廉江,雲浮的羅定,以及廣西的容縣。20世紀20年代前後,粵西地區連續幾年水災,山洪暴發,洪水肆虐,房屋倒塌,農田村舍頓成澤國。無數災民無家可歸,流離失所,只得鋌而走險,跨洋求生。短短十數年間,就有過百萬人被裹挾進了下南洋的大潮。

高州人下南洋,以信宜人為最多。信宜人下南洋,得益於李季濂及其創辦的錦綸泰。李季濂常年奔走於中國和南洋之間,多次目睹被「賣豬仔」的華工們所遭受的非人待遇和悲慘境遇,一心想幫助那些去南洋謀生的鄉親們。



他和那些「豬仔頭」們對著幹,要分布在各地的錦綸泰為沒有盤纏下南洋的鄉親,提供無息貸款和最優惠的船票,提供沿途的住宿服務和種種方便。很多粵西地區的「南洋客」,都是經他的「錦綸泰」往返南洋。…

這段史實說明,至少在19世紀中葉,森美蘭地區就已經生活著相當數量的華族礦工。這些華族礦工,基本都是中國東南沿海地區的破產農民,在生活無著走投無路之際,冒死漂洋過海來到這里當苦工的。

英國人在控制了馬來聯邦乃至整個馬來半島後,瘋狂地掠奪這里的錫礦、金礦和橡膠、胡椒等資源。為了滿足大規模開礦和開墾種植園的需要,更是大量引入外來勞工。來到馬來半島的勞工不僅有印度人、阿拉伯人,更有如潮水般洶湧而至的華人。華人下南洋,是人類歷史上極為罕見的跨國大遷徙,在持續大半個世紀的時間里,成百上千萬的華人來到南洋,掀起了規模空前的華人下南洋的大潮。…
