70年代初期,美國激進分子與政府間衝突日趨嚴重,越戰、種族歧視和經濟衰退等動盪不安的肇因,開始反映於「反文化」電影之中。這類型電影以年輕世代為目標觀眾,運用前衛電影手法創造有別於以往的影像內涵與敘事風格,進而發展出「新電影」價值體系的風潮。

70年代中後期,幾部票房賣座的新電影讓美國影業受益良多,其中以「電影小子」導演(movie brat)的表現最為亮眼。人們熟悉的喬治.盧卡斯、史蒂芬.史匹柏、法蘭西斯.柯波拉以及馬丁.史柯西斯等電影小子皆科班出身,風格深受60年代「法國新浪潮」影響,熟稔其帶有現代主義色彩的跳接、插敘及場面調度等敘事手法,外加對古典好萊塢傳統的尊崇,使得電影小子作品多兼具商業和藝術價值。
