陳之藩《旅美小卷》出國與出家
臨行前夕，有一個朋友與我話別，他說：“你去後，我有一種心情，即是好像出家的樣子，我鄙夷這個時代，我鄙夷我們人類。唯一能一談的是你，而你要走了。我待在這里沒有甚麼話好說，我將沈默的望望天，沈默的看看水，沈默的翻開經卷，沈默的喝杯苦茶……人生，究竟是干些甚麼，我感覺困惑，可以趁這個空閑多想一想。等你失望著歸來，我們再談。”
幾乎沒有人不熱中留學的風氣下，這位朋友的話如古廟罄聲，讓人深思，讓人警醒。可是話中三昧是還不容易滲透的，等到到了萬頭鑽動的十里洋場，看見了車水馬龍，看見了高樓巨廈，自己在五層樓上的一個鴿籠里，壁上只有輪船上才有的那麼小的窗戶，通過窗子如果能望見一朵白雲那是太幸運了，這時，我忽然悟出拈花之微旨，原來出家的不是我的朋友，而是我自己。…

陳之藩《旅美小卷》哲人的微笑
飛過萬家燈火的東京，飛過萬頃碧波的太平洋，飛過萬里雪山的阿拉斯加，飛到萬頭鑽動的紐約。一路上不疲憊，但也並不舒適，三天後的早晨，我坐在胡適之先生家談天了。
胡先生說昨晚即打電話與飛機場連絡，知道我坐的這一班次在阿拉斯加發生故障，遲延了兩小時。隨後，他為我弄一壺茶，一個大橘子，要我解一解旅途的勞頓。
胡先生住的地方很安靜，並不太寬敞，是一所大樓的第五層。設備當然還不壞。不過，書籍的零亂與堆積與北平的東廠胡同差不多。胡先生在案頭拿起兩大本剪報，微笑著遞給我，那兩本剪報是清算胡適思想“遺毒”與紅樓夢事件。香港友人寄給他的。
