「情動詩學」一詞源自亞里士多德的悲劇理論，這一理論被視為詩性思維的奠基文件。它描述了某一藝術作品——在本章中，我們將關注電影影像——如何構建觀眾的情感參與。亞里士多德的「淨化」（catharsis）概念（1953年）也許是通過媒介調節情感的最著名模型。它區別於其他使人情緒化的藝術手段，因為它包含一種特定的情感動力。
根據亞里士多德的觀點，悲劇旨在通過戲劇性場景的安排，逐步強化「悲劇情感」（恐懼與憐憫）的激發。在此，正是修辭意圖決定了情感的性質、強度和層次。情感被激發，以便得以有目的地釋放、淨化或消解。…
