文化有根 創意是伴 Bridging Creativity
《悲情城市》有一點極難拿捏,就是有關知識分子。知識分子不易描實,因為這種人常示人以思想,轉述他們的思想,搞不好就讓人誤以為是創作者的思想。孝賢以前的作品里還沒有出現過這麼多的知識分子甚至有關他們的命運,這一次陷阱得以渡過,是孝賢拍“天意”,以“自然法則”出入,是以知識分子展現為現象,“自然法則底下人們的活動”。由此反觀回去,孝賢的電影美學其實一向如此,照說本不該對孝賢有“大題材”“小題材”的要求。這種要求,如果不是投資者的廣告手段,就是某某分子自作多情的偏狹。中國大陸電影受“大題材”之誤,其實已到了甘心情願的地步,又常常是哲學之狼披上庶民的外衣,狗嘴里偏吐出象牙來,觀眾不傻,當然將“悲劇”作“喜劇”看。我若濫好心,倒可以拿大陸的例子來勸孝賢,可孝賢在這方面是“免疫”的。所以找指《悲情城市》為大樹,是指人物關係龐雜,卻自然生長為樹。 …

八九年冬,說洛杉磯有冬,無異“為賦新詞強說愁”,孝賢由紐約沿路過來,一行還有朱天文,吳念真,舒琪。吳念真半路走了,我心儀甚久,卻無緣識面。
放電影的前一晚,盧非易一車將他們載來,我卻正在洗手間,聽得外面車門關得砰砰響,心里著急。出來相見,孝賢還是那個孝賢,一棵大樹瞞得嚴嚴實實。朱天文卻令我一驚,小個子,話不多,渺目煙視。孝賢的幾部好片都由朱天文編劇,其才已是侯孝賢電影的構成之一。天文離洛杉磯時送我她的書,當夜即讀,甚是敬佩,此處不表。
第二天去西好萊塢看《悲情城市》,映前不免是禮服晃動,酒食隨取的老套,頓生無聊之心,想,孝賢的電影在此地演,若錯,自在誤上。 …
