“八年來我一直在端詳著自己的妻子……”石井博士到庭院裏去，一邊走，一邊在腦子裏浮起了平時沒有想到過的念頭。他來回用兩手使勁地搓揉著剛剛剃得很光的下巴和兩頰，搓得面頰泛起一片血紅色。博士總是習慣於自己刮臉。冰涼的雨已經停了。博士在一塊石頭上脫下庭院木屐①，光起腳來，掖起單衣下擺，開始散步了。八仙花噴苞盛開，好像密密實實簇擁在一起的花束。博士打這兒走過時，這一帶黑黝黝的樹幹一直濕到了樹根。每當他著實地踩著冰涼的、潮濕的庭院裏的土地，就覺得有一種難以說明的力量和快感湧上心頭。正巧那時夫人站在廚房的窗邊，在那兒眺望剛剛放晴的陽光，看著被風吹落的樹葉上的水珠子。博士走到水槽跟前，準備洗腳上的汙泥，這時夫人吩咐女仆往丈夫的腳上倒水，自己親自給送去幹的擦腳布。就是在這種場合，博士也總是冷冰冰的，他的習慣就是這樣。不論在什麽時候他總是同樣的態度，同樣的親切，同樣的冷冰冰。這位博士難得在水槽跟前呆那麽久，他用深沈的音量，低聲唱著得意的民謠曲調。…
