從京師到省城的路雖然漫長，但從省城到家裏的路似乎更加漫長。已經三次了，我不知道前兩次自己是怎麽回家的，騎在馬上，看著周圍的景物依然如舊，心中難免不湧上苦澀與酸楚。近鄉情更怯，我不知道該如何面對父親的冷臉，而母親的安慰只能讓我徒增煩惱，至於鄉鄰和親戚的嘲諷，我則因為習慣而麻木了。
終於還是到了家門口，書童去敲開了門，仆人連聲向裏傳報：少爺回來了，少爺回來了。首先迎接出來的是母親，她一看我的臉色就什麽都明白了，悄聲告訴我，你父親在會客，等他心情好的時再告訴他吧。我點了點頭，因羞慚而沈默不語。…
