在德勒茲那裡，正是在這一意義上，可以說培根是塞尚的繼承者，他對非有機身體活性狀態的描繪不是從形象化的角度，而是從感覺本身去呈現非有機生命的純粹力量。在這裡，繪畫被當作一種解放人類的嘗試，帶著「對肉的憐憫」①，試圖將人們從日常的定見中解脫出來。
由此可見，現代藝術在對意義開放與價值重估的追求中，所能達到的程度是不同的。因此，對現代藝術的判定可以根據這一標准，即能否釋放出非有機生命的力量並將意義與價值引向開放，以及在什麼程度上達到這一力量的釋放與意義及價值的開放。…

在德勒茲那裡，意義與價值可以這樣理解：「意義之意義在於某一事物所表現的力的性質：這種力是能動的還是反動的，有什麼差別？價值之價值在於相應事物所表現的權力意志的性質：這種權力意志是肯定的還是否定的，有什麼差異？」[8]
在現代藝術這裡，它們首先追求能動力所帶來的開放意義；這是一種對現有意義的「促變」，它拒絕對意義的確定化詮釋，並要求我們的詮釋工作不斷地重新開始。其次，它們還追求肯定的權力意志所帶來的新的價值；這一價值以是否能夠肯定一切差異為判定標准。這是一種尼采意義上的對一切價值的重估。它打破既定價值的評價體系，而將新的標准，即評價體系自身的開放性標准作為價值判定的參考系。…
