在當代以感性爲核心旨意的審美現代性討論中，學者們不斷回溯到“埃斯特惕卡”的“感性學”本義，以至有學者認爲當恢複其“感性學”原名。不過，鑒於西文該詞本義突出的並非感性本身也非美，而是人感知、獲得美的活動狀態或過程即“審美”，故1980年代以來，越來越多的漢語美學界學者紛紛表示用“審美學”這個譯名更爲妥切⑧，也以此出現了多部以《審美學》命名的美學原理教材⑨。另外，將“埃斯特惕卡(克)”譯爲“審美學”還有一個重要的方便之處：可以順理成章地將其研究對象確定爲“審美(活動)”…

作爲現代漢語詞匯的“美學”是一個外來詞，在清末西學東漸的歷史進程中逐漸出現於中國人的語匯中。作爲一門學問，美學也曾在20世紀的中國學術史上獨領風騷，屢掀熱潮。即使是在幾次美學熱已經沉寂有年的今天，人們依舊會在各種學術與非學術場合，每每遭遇“美學”一詞。那麼，人們究竟是怎麼用這個詞的？作爲一個學科的名稱，它有哪些方面的內涵？本文並不想給這個概念再增添一個定義，只是試圖通過對“美學”概念的多層面分梳，來揭明人們自覺不自覺地賦予“美學”術語的諸多含義與用法。
