陳冠學《田園之秋》十月六日（中）

踱回來之時，聽見老楊桃樹上有烏嘴觱雛索食的siùh siùh聲，這聲音昨日好像也聽見，只是一樣聽而不聞。牠們是何時築的巢，我更是毫無覺察。今日是何故，我竟這樣虛靈，什麼都看到聽到了？母鳥啣食到巢時，這聲音就響一陣子。據我所知，烏嘴觱雛的嗓門蓋過群類，三十弓外就聽得見。我常為牠們捏冷汗。每次有這樣的聲音，花貓就在樹下逡巡不去，有時還奮勇爬上樹去，若不是牠對細枝椏拿不穩，早成了牠的點心了。母鳥一日間要餵食數百次，你說這烏嘴觱雛豈不是整天價siùh個不停？不知道蛇有沒有聽覺，有人說沒有，若有的話，那也是極可耽憂的。 …

陳冠學《田園之秋》十月六日（上）

人們在生存歷鍊中早養成了專注的習慣，一些不關生存的事物，往往視而不見，聽而不聞。大約地說，天地間的萬事萬物，人們所經心的不過萬分的一、二罷了。因此，世界的絕大部分，對於單獨的某一個人來說，或許自始就不存在的；這個人活了一生，天天見著聽著覺著，至死去時，卻宛若未曾有過一次接觸，單是想像起來都叫人不敢相信，實在不可思議。事實上，人們並非時時都落在嚴酷的生存事態中的，可以想見原始人當其吃飽了獵得來的野獸肉之後，生存事態的嚴酷逼迫便一下子完全解除了。但後人卻在心理上將生存事態給無限化，不厭不倦地沒進這一事態的假象中去，使得目珠死盯著正前方，而無法左顧右盼。…
