貝利奧走後，王道士也暫時離開了藏經洞。由於藏經的數量的減少，遊客也無心觀賞了，甚至有人對此事起了責難之意。
以後的數年中，日本和俄國的探險家又來找過王道士。王道士對手中剩下的寶物越來越少深感惋惜，同時又迫於貧困，還是不得不拿它來換錢度日。他心里一直在想，為什麽這些外國人都跑到這里來買這些舊書呢？
俄國人走了之後，又過了一年，從北京來了一些軍人。他們把洞里剩下的經卷全都用馬馱走了。這些軍人來時王道士躲了起來。他打聽到這些軍人都走了時，又到藏經洞來了一趟，但是洞里連一片紙都沒剩下，一空如洗。王道士點了一盞燈火，走進洞內。周圍的洞壁上只在北面畫有壁畫，這時也都可以看得到了。畫上畫的僧侶穿著朱色的衣服，站在他們對面的女人的裙裾是青色的，王道士面對這些精美的壁畫，看得目瞪口呆。…
