“進來吧！進來，親愛的于貝爾！壓根兒就談不上打擾我們！”隨即我又傷心地補充一句：“對不對，安琪兒？”
安琪兒答道：“沒有打擾，我們在閑聊。”
“我只是路過，”于貝爾說道，“想打聲招呼。過兩天我要動身去比斯克拉；我說服羅朗陪我一道前往。”
我頓時氣憤起來：
“自負的于貝爾，是我呀，是我讓他下這個決心的。當時我們倆從阿貝爾家出來，我對他說他應當去那兒旅行。”…

“……有些人說出去，立刻就能出去。大自然敲他們的門：門外是遼闊的平原，他們一走到曠野，就把居所置於腦後，忘得一乾二凈。晚上要睡覺了，他們才又回到居所，很容易就找見了。
“他們若是有興致，還可以露宿，將自己的住宅丟下一天一夜，甚至忘卻好長一段時間。您若是覺得這很自然，那就是沒有很好領會我的意思。對這種事，您更要感到詫異……我可以明確告訴您，就說我們吧，我們羨慕那些十分自由的居民，也是因為我們每次費力建造的安居的房子，總是同我們形影不離，一建起來就罩在我們頭上，固然能遮雨，但是也擋住了太陽。…
