根據這些敘述，完全可以為他們分別立傳，而把他們從小說的整體結構中抽取出來。但這樣一來，這些在小說的整體結構中具有飽脹的意蘊的敘述，其意義空間就會迅速坍塌，與其餘的敘述單元構成的整體的連貫性就會突然中斷而自身也喪失了表現的力度。在小說的整體結構中，這些敘述單元是與其餘的敘述單元互相映照，互相發揮的，並且正因為這種彼此的映照和發揮，各敘述單元才顯現出多極的意義指向，以此構成了小說具有整合意味的意義世界，各敘述單元也在各自特定的位置上紛呈異彩，人物因得到多側面的烘托而豐沛起來。「抽取」使彼此的映照之光熄滅，敘述單元那只有在光照之中才顯現出來的多極意蘊因此而趨向死亡。脫離了整體，敘述單元就會顯得如此孤弱而難以自存。因此，我們可以認為：文本的整合性乃是各要素之積，而非彼此之和。
