字是由五個十字形水槽構成的,如果把十字形水槽的輪廓用圖畫表現出來,不就是 形嗎?這也就是「行」字的初文,而五個十字形水槽就是五「行」,五「行」其物,是先民據以確定和領會四方和四時的基准。既然古人根據五「行」領會四方和四時,那麼,據以為四方和四時命名,不就是順理成章的嗎?也就是說,古人之所以用「五行」其名命名以四方和四時為基礎的五行體系,不過是因為,他們最初正是藉「五行」其物領會四方和四時以及五行體系的。也正是因此,在後世的五行學說中,五行才與四時、四方密不可分。
綜上所述,陰陽五行學說並非源於對金木水火土的認識,而是源於曆法月令制度,曆法月令制度就是五行系統的知識原型,兩者之間的同構對應關係一目了然,而古往今來的學者竟因《鸿範》之說一葉障目,習而不察,至使五行說的底蘊一直暗昧不明。曆法月令系統不僅是五行說形式結構的原型,也是五行說動力機制的淵源,追本溯源,兩者原是一回事。…

《尚書·甘誓》也提及五行,亦是關於五行的較早記載,據說「啟與有扈戰於甘之野,作《甘誓》。」文中控訴有扈之罪,稱「有扈氏威侮五行,怠棄三正」,顧頡剛先生稱,三正之說為漢人移服色改正朔的論調[5],足證《甘誓》不可靠。《甘誓》或不可靠,但「五行」與「三正」並稱,足證在古人觀念中,「五行」與「三正」一樣,也與曆法制度有關,鄭玄注所謂「五行,四時盛德所行之政也」是也。[6]「威侮五行,怠棄三正」,等於說不奉天子正朔,可謂大逆不道,自然是罪不容赦。…
