陳世驤在翻譯《文賦》中的「選義按部，考辭就班」一語為英文時，極富機心地譯「班」為 order（即秩序）。看起來，陳世驤對柯勒律治（Samuel Taylor Coleridge）為詩下的定義深有會心，也說得上別有用心：詩=用最佳的秩序安置最佳的詞匯（Poetry=the best words in their best order）。

幾十年後，捷克漢學家普實克（Jaroslav Průšek）也有過類似於戴望舒那樣的猜想，只不過比後者更感性、更直接。普實克傾向於以膾炙人口的作品為出發點，去討論問題，去獲取理論結果，因為作品越膾炙人口，理論結果就可能越有說服性或公信力。
普實克猜測說，在白居易的《賣炭翁》中，大有可能隱藏著一個看不見，但能夠被直覺所感知的抒情基址（basic lyrical ground-plan）。抒情基址的任務，是為全詩的主題、情感走向和詩意範疇劃定界限，或給出一個大致的輪廓，類似於有軍隊設防的邊境線。在穩固、妥當的抒情基址之上，才是一個較為完整的故事[59]。…
