崇高的實踐帶來的是當今藝術最為關鍵的實驗精神，而不是尋求共通感。「交流根本不存在，因為標凖體系不夠穩定，作為無法找到它的指定位置，確保得到公眾鑑賞的機會。」21，這種後現代的「崇高感」更強調一種當下感受的異爭感：想象力的無力呈現理念的力量給我們痛感，但理性力量的整體要求和它蘊涵的道德力量又給我們快感。
崇高與先鋒本身就是密不可分的，而崇高也許是唯一的描述現代藝術感覺的方式。在崇高這種矛盾的情感中，不確定性時有時無，這是十七世紀末到十八世紀末的浪漫主義的藝術反思方式，但它仍舊不夠徹底，因為它仍舊以某種確定的理念作為最後的歸宿。而從十九到二十世紀的藝術賭注才真正利用崇高美學來使自己成為不確定性的見證者。在詰問此在也就是作品的同時，先鋒派藝術拋棄了作品以前那種接受者團體相關的認識作用，也就是像康德那樣將共通感作為合法性的推斷，而不是實際的現實。…
