鑒於美國是個如此年輕的國家，根本沒有一個世襲的等級和封爵制度，也不存在王室加封榮譽的傳統，甚至連一條眾人皆知的可以往上爬的社會階梯也沒有。因而同其他國家相比，美國人更加依賴自己的大學體系，指望這個機構培養人們的勢利觀念，建立社會等級機制。在別的國家，人們不僅僅依賴大學來實現社會地位，還有其他的傳統途徑。而在美國，尤其本世紀以來，只有高等院校這樣的組織，可以成為實現所有最高榮譽的來源。或者說，受高等教育至少是實現地位追求的最佳途徑。…
