有那麼一會兒，我們跳到了備受歡迎的專欄作家的邊上，他正在和一個可愛的深膚色女人跳舞。我對他說：「傑拉爾先生，愛情不像報紙的文章，是吧？」跳到努爾吉汗和麥赫麥特身邊時，我做得就像他們早就是情人那樣。看見祖姆魯特女士祖姆魯特女士，我用法語和她說了幾句話，因為每次來看母親，她都會以不讓用人明白的借口不時說上幾句法語。但是讓人們髮笑的並不是我的詼諧幽默，而是我的醉意。茜貝爾也不想和我跳一段難忘的舞了，她輕聲告訴我，她是多麼地愛我；喝醉的我是多麼可愛；如果做媒的事讓我不開心了，她向我道歉，但她這麼做完全是為了我們朋友的幸福；不可信的扎伊姆扔下努爾吉汗，又纏上了我那遠房親戚的女孩。我皺著眉頭告訴她，其實扎伊姆是個非常好、非常值得信賴的朋友。另外我還告訴她，扎伊姆好奇她為什麼不喜歡他。…
