快要靠近天鵝的時候，阿卡停下來看看跟在後面的大雁們是不是排成了筆直的一字長蛇陣，中間行距相隔是否勻稱。“趕快遊過來排列整齊，”她吩咐說，“不要盯著天鵝呆看，好像你們從來都沒有見到過美麗的動物，不管他們對你們說些什麼難聽話都不要在意。”
阿卡已經不是第一次來拜訪那對年邁的天鵝王夫婦了。他們對阿卡這樣一隻有淵博知識、有很大名望的鳥總是以禮相待。但是她很膩味從圍聚在他們周圍的大鵝中間穿過去。在她從天鵝身邊遊過的時候，她覺得自己是多麼的瘦小和難看，這種感覺以前是從未有過的。有些天鵝還說一些挖苦話，罵她是灰傢伙或者窮光蛋。對於這類譏嘲，最聰明的辦法就是佯裝沒有聽見。…
