霍普金斯斯曾經逆志戒絕詩藝,因為怕分心不得事主,此與皎然黜筆硯的故事很像。後來是耶穌會長老教士勸他放心寫作,才重操舊業,可是終其一生也不輕易示人。他的作品都是死後才發表的。霍普金斯的詩一向不易理解,以其用字冷僻艱深,涵蘊特異之故,唯與神學無關──是文學問題。翻譯霍普金斯尤難,因為他遣辭造句殊為大膽,志在創格趨新,每每逸出常態,所以語言次序可能顛倒相反,非入神揣測是無從領略的。又,霍普金斯愛用單音節字眼,盎格魯.撒克遜本色辭藻,其全稱晦澀而語意拮摋,令讀者一時困惑,一時又覺得驚喜不置。…

《唐才子傳》的文筆不好。
辛文房是元初西域人。他為自己的書寫引言時竟也自稱為「異方之士」,令人發噱。我說他文筆不好,並沒有批評他壞的意思,而是覺得這書前後讀過來讀過去,總有點怪怪的,不太習慣,不像正統好文章。…
