從種族，環境，時代三個原則出發，丹納舉出許多顯著的例子說明偉大的藝術家不是孤立的，而只是一個藝術家家族的傑出的代表，有如百花盛開的園林中的一朵更美艷的花，一株茂盛的植物的“一根最高的枝條”。而在藝術家家族背後還有更廣大的群眾，“我們隔了幾世紀只聽到藝術家的聲音；但在傳到我們耳邊來的響亮的聲音之下，還能辨別出群眾的覆雜而無窮無盡的歌聲，在藝術家四周齊聲台唱。只因為有了這一片和聲，藝術家才成其為偉大。”他又以每種植物只能在適當的夭時地利中生長為例，說明每種藝術的品種和流派只能在特殊的精神氣候中產生，從而指出藝術家必須適應社會的環境，滿足社會的要求，否則就要被淘汰。…
