他們很快就走到了大雁阿卡和獵狗卡爾的身邊，阿卡正向卡爾說話：“去年我們春季飛行的時候，”那隻領頭的老雁阿卡說道，“有一天早晨，亞克西、卡克西和我一起飛出去。我們從達拉那省的錫利延湖飛過達拉那省和赫爾辛蘭省交界處的大森林。我們俯視下去，別什麽的東西也望不見，只見墨綠色的樹冠，樹梢間還有厚厚的積雪。河流仍舊凍著冰，只有一兩個地方露出了黑色的罅隙，靠河岸邊有些地方積雪已經融化。我們幾乎沒有見到什麽村落和農莊，只見到幾個灰蒙蒙的小木棚，那些是夏天牧羊人的居所，冬天空蕩蕩的什麽都沒有。森林里一條條運送木材的小路蜿蜒曲折，河邊岸上堆積著大堆大堆的木材。…
