「我拔他們的頭簪、耳環，摸他們的衣服，都像有病或酒醉似的沒有醒來。我便拿金盒回來了。出魏城西門，走了二百多里，隱約看見城牆上的銅臺，漳水向東流去，月上林梢，晨雞鳴動。去時很急忙，回來時很高興，忘記了疲勞。為了感謝您的恩德，所以和您咨商、計謀。我不顧半夜三更，往返七百里，不怕危險，走過了五六座城，希望減少您的憂慮，我怎敢說辛苦？」

楊巨源《紅線傳》 （上）
紅線，是潞州節度使薛嵩家的一個婢女，擅長彈奏阮咸，還通曉經史，薛嵩命她掌管文書章奏，稱她為「內記室」。有次軍中舉行盛大宴會，紅線對薛嵩說：「羯鼓的聲音聽起來很悲涼，敲鼓的人一定有什麼心事。」薛嵩平時也懂音樂，說：「你說得很對。」於是，找來打鼓人一問，他說：「昨晚我妻子死了，我沒敢請假。」薛嵩聽完就讓他回家了。
這時正是唐肅宗至德年間，河南、河北一帶很不安寧。朝廷命令薛嵩守衛淦陽，並控制山東。戰爭剛過，軍府初建，朝廷命薛嵩將女兒嫁給魏博節度使田承嗣的兒子，又讓他的兒子娶滑臺節度使令狐章的女兒。使淦陽、魏博、滑臺三鎮聯姻，經常派使者相互往來。魏博節度使田承嗣肺部患病，天熱就變得嚴重。他常說：「我若駐守山東，那裡天氣比較涼快，我還能多活幾年。」於是，他從軍中選拔了三千勇士，稱為外宅男，給其優厚的待遇。他命令三百人在衙門口和宅院內值班，並選擇適當時機，想吞併潞州。…
