然而，我們看到，即使是在當代社會，這種相對分離性仍然存在。在哈貝馬斯看來，一體化進程實質上是一種公共話語的交往過程，在這個交往過程中，“只有當意願形成過程（此過程最終導向決策，並以團體組織形式出現）對圍繞它的政治交往的自由的價值、觀點、貢獻和辯論是開放的，它才能實現共同尋求真理的目標”。特朗普的民粹主義路線得勝和主流精英話語的失真，表明平民公共領域與精英公共領域的分離仍然存在，並且即使是在當代民主政體框架內，仍然有著深刻的矛盾與沖突。這一沖突的實質是底層民眾利益與精英集團利益的矛盾與沖突。只要底層民眾利益受到損害，平民公共領域的波瀾總會掀起。
後真相時代：理性與非理性的相互交織…
