從倫敦飛往巴黎的班機上，坐著一位瘦小的老婦人。她衣著粗陋而整潔，看得出是個打雜女工。她懷中抱著一個手提包，里面有1400美元——這是她三年來的積蓄。她臉上流露出興奮與忐忑的神情，因為此行將實現她的理想。
這位哈里斯太太一年到頭上門給顧客做家務，每天工作10小時。三年前的一天，她在顧客家看見兩件美麗絕倫的衣服，便念念不忘。她問明這衣服是從巴黎黛爾赫時裝公司買來的，因而開始攢錢。今天，她終於坐上了飛往巴黎的班機。…
