用具裝潢的發展程度，在較低文明階段裏，比人體裝飾落後得多。最簡陋的翡及安部落已經有相當豐富的人體裝飾，而最進步的北方狩獵民族卻還只有很少的用具上的裝潢。如果我們以為用具裝潢，就是把飾物附加在用具上的意思，則有好許多的原始人群，實在是沒有用具裝潢的。我們從來沒有發現過布須曼人掘土用的棒上或弓上有什麽飾物，在翡及安有裝飾的制造品也是少有的珍寶。但是現在我們所要講的用具裝潢，是一種較廣泛的觀念。我們不但承認另加飾物為裝潢，就是對於一件用具的磨光修整，也認為是一種裝潢。…

如果一位將要去訪察異國的旅行者，連關於他目的地的形勢和旅程方向的概念都沒有一個，那大概一開頭就容易走錯的。所以在我們開始自己的研究之前，關於我們要集中注意去研究的那個現象的性質，必須有一個初步的普通知識。關於什麽是藝術這個問題，必須等到現在還未開始的這種研究終結之後，才能得到適切而完美的答案。至於我們從開頭就打算對藝術特性有個說明，只是為了要得一點初步的知識。到這研究終結的時候，我們也許不得不對這個說明作一種很重大的修改呢。…
