宗白華·中國美學史中重要問題的初步探索（12）
宋代的郭熙論山水畫，說“山水有可行者，有可望者，有可遊者，有可居者。”(《林泉高致》)可行、可望、可遊、可居，這也是園林藝術的基本思想。園林中也有建築，要能夠居人，使人獲得休息，但它不只是為了居人，它還必須可遊，可行，可望。“望”最重要。一切美術都是“望”，都是欣賞。不但“遊”可以發生“望“的作用(頤和園的長廊不但領導我們“遊”，而且領導我們“望”)，就是“住”，也同樣要“望”。窗子並不單為了透空氣，也是為了能夠望出去，望到一個新的境界，使我們獲得美的感受。
窗子在園林建築藝術中起著很重要的作用。有了窗子，內外就發生交流。窗外的竹子或青山，經過窗子的框框望去，就是一幅畫。頤和園樂壽堂差不多四邊都是窗子，周圍粉墻列著許多小窗，面向湖景，每個窗子都等於一幅小畫(李漁所謂“尺幅窗，無心畫”)。而且同一個窗子，從不同的角度看出去，景色都不相同。這樣，畫的境界就無限地增多了。…

《文選》中有一些描寫當時建築的文章，描寫當時城市宮殿建築的華麗，看來似乎只是誇張，只是幻想。其實不然。我們現在從地下墳墓中發掘出來實物材料，那些顏色華美的古代建築的點綴品，說明《文選》中的那些描寫，是有現實根據的，離開現實並不是那麽遠的。…
