那麼真正的歷史驅力是什麼？若沒有這種歷史驅力所攜帶的歷史勢能，詩歌便無法真正實現其自身？追究起來，所謂詩歌的歷史驅力，是很難通過還原而再現的，它無法被準確客觀地計量，說起來倒是有種神秘的意味，仿佛有只看不見的手在推動歷史。浪漫派所推崇的創造力概念、波德萊爾的現代性說法、艾略特的傳統意識等均顯示出歷史驅力的強大推動。毋庸置疑，歷史驅力是詩歌自我革新的強勁動力。
從新詩史看，新詩的發展與自我更新也同樣是這種驅力的結果。但無論我們怎樣具體地追蹤這種驅力的構造與邏輯，都不能離開這一基本含義，即歷史驅力乃是試圖超越當下歷史的企圖。自浪漫主義詩歌以來，這種企圖表現為對現代世界的超越，這是我們所處身的歷史階段決定的，在這樣的歷史情境里·，語言對於革命的誘惑、對真實的激情與改造現實的渴望、對於救贖的幻想，對於藝術形而上學的執念就從未斷絕過，這也是現代世界對詩歌提出的基本要求。恰如哈姆雷特之警醒：…
