人──理性的生命，不能不看到別的生命也有同樣對人的愛，因此這些愛的情感一定會發生沖突，產生某種不好的、與愛的概念完全相反的東西。
如果人們把理智用於為動物的、缺乏善意的情感辯護，用來不斷地加強被稱之為愛的情感，並把它擴大到反常的程度，那麽這種情感就不僅不是善，反而會把人變成最兇惡、最殘忍的動物──很久以來，這已成了人人皆知的真理。福音書中說的正是這種情況：“如果你身上的光就是黑暗，那麽黑暗又該是什麽樣的呢？”如果人身上除了對自我的愛、對自己孩子的愛之外別無所愛，那麽就不會有人們現在存在的百分之九十九的惡。人們之間的百分之九十九的惡，是由於虛偽的情感而產生，這種情感受到人們頌揚並被稱為愛，它與真愛的相似程度，就好像動物生命和人的生命的相似程度一樣。…
