還需要注意的是，胡適不僅強調「白話」（口語）入詩，而且屢屢提醒「文法」（語法）的重要性。關於中國古代的文體，他批評得最為激烈的就是律詩和駢文，言其「不講文法」、「不通」。[32]胡適的看法若孤立起來看，顯得頗為獨斷、偏頗。但是，若從前文所述之韻律與句法之矛盾關係來看，胡適的做法有其不得不為的初衷。因為律詩和駢文這兩種文體，恰好就是詩與文中受到韻律法則支配最深的體裁。
對於胡適而言，最為迫切的是讓邏輯關係明確的現代語言用文學的方式「催生」出來。他優先考慮的顯然是如何讓現代漢語在詩歌寫作中「立足」，而不是建設詩歌的韻律形式。所以他反復強調把話說「通」；而且他屢屢提醒人們要注意語法，不要因為詩律的需要去寫一些「病句」，這說明他對於傳統詩文中語法與邏輯受到韻律的擠壓這個根本問題是有直覺的感知的。…
