天哪，多大的一座城市啊！他還從來沒有見過這樣的地方。他的那座城市，每到夜里都是黑漆漆的，整個大街上只亮著一盞燈。低矮的木頭房子，房門用護板緊關著。街上天一黑就一個人也沒有了，大家全都關在家里，只有一整群一整群的狗（數以百計）在通宵達旦地狂吠。不過那里天氣暖和，而且有人給吃的。可這里，天哪，卻沒有吃的！這里到處是敲敲打打、轟轟隆隆的響聲。燈光多亮，行人多多，馬拉轎車多多，天氣有多麽冷啊！從被趕著奔跑的馬匹身上冒出的熱氣，氣喘籲籲的馬嘴里呼出的熱氣，已經冰結；馬蹄踩著稀松的積雪，落在石板路上，發出得得的響聲，車馬擁擠不堪。天哪，真想吃點東西，那怕是一小片面包也好！而且突然手指痛得要命！一個警官從旁邊走了過去，他把頭一扭，免得發現那個小男孩。…
