對於縣城乃至農村人來說，行，主要就是徒步，俗稱“起旱”。幹部下鄉，徒步;學生上學，徒步;走親訪友，徒步;遷徙搬家，更是徒步。那時候的人 特別能走路，一天走上六七十裏不在話下。汽車站最早在縣城北門，幾輛木廂汽車，兩邊很小的窗子，後面開門;有點象囚車，也有點象郵車，還有點象裝豬的車。 只開往蕪湖、繁昌、南陵，班次也不正常。後來在蘇紅廣場做了個新車站，比較象樣了，開往外地的班車也多了一些。到蕪湖是一元二角五分，到合肥是二元四角。 1958年之前，青弋江上沒有橋，汽車出城要過輪渡。有一艘鐵質擺渡船，方形，俗稱“鐵烏龜”。汽車開到渡船上，兩岸工人以繩索拉動，渡船便象烏龜鳧水一 樣，慢慢地到了對岸。公路為砂石鋪成，路況極差，坑坑窪窪;發大水的日子，不能通行。跑趟蕪湖至少要半天，楊毛埂一段特別亂糟糟，經常出事故。跑合肥則更…
