在後殖民研究中，廖炳惠指出：「利用這種觀念，許多文化研究者與殖民主義者發現，權力並非二元對立，有主奴之分，或從從核心垂降的，而是多點散播，吸收內化和拒抗，用新的形式來發展的交織糾纏的網狀結構 [. . .]。因此不斷流動卻又多點散開的狀況，可以產生來自於各地的發展，去挑戰一神論或某種殖民者、有錢有勢者想發展的神話。[. . .] 所謂的正典、標準，乃至於直線的權威，都被質疑。」(222-23)
