居處近山，初搬來時才是仲春，住了一陣子，頗為不曾見到一隻昆蟲入屋而覺得納悶，以為莫非卡森筆下的「寂靜的春天」提前來臨，各種污染和殺蟲劑的大量使用已經使小生物們從地面上絕跡了？
我並沒有猜對。五月一到，蟲虺紛紛從冬眠中醒來，開始來報到了。先是羽翼翩翻的大小飛蛾，繼則是頭角崢嶸的各色甲蟲，入夜屋裡亮起了燈，牠們便攀附在紗窗上伺機棄暗投明。成功的那些，進得屋來，或繞室彷徨莫知所止，或盤據一點瞑然入定，更多的則是在燈下打轉，時時和燈罩碰撞，咚咚有聲。數小時後便見陳屍處處，盡成投火的烈士。…

黄碧端·孫將軍印象記──兼記一隻箱子
孫立人將軍在十一月十九日告別了他充滿傳奇的一生。
前年夏初，我曾因偶然的機緣見到孫將軍，得半日的盤桓閒話，此時寫下來，也許聊可作為一點歷史註腳和對孫將軍的紀念。
先翁和孫將軍是清華的同學，在校時少年意氣相投，曾一起組隊打籃球，且結拜為兄弟。先翁來台之初因此曾在孫府小住，有一隻大皮箱當時便留在孫宅。其後不數年，孫將軍被黜，形同幽囚，三十幾年間事實上整個世界都失去了他的訊息。這隻留置孫宅的箱子，先翁自己都可能忘了，先翁過世後，晚輩更無一人知道。一九八八年的春天，忽然親友輾轉傳話，說孫立人將軍有電話，希望我們去取回一隻先人的箱子，了卻他一樁心事。外子和我因此在那年暑假驅車台中，按圖找到向上路孫府。…
