初見的禮完了，那老婆子就領伊人和兩個女學生到O的臥室里去。O的臥室就在客室的間壁，伊人進去一看，見O紅著了臉，睡在紅花的縐布被里，枕邊上有一本書攤在那里。腳後擺著一個火缽，火缽邊上有一個坐的蒲團，這大約是那老婆子坐的地方。火缽上的鐵瓶里，有一瓶沸的開水，在那里發水蒸汽，所以室內溫暖得很。伊人一進這臥房，就聞得一陣香水和粉的香氣，這大約是處女的閨房特有氣息。老婆子領他們進去之後，把火缽移上前來，又從客室里拿了三個坐的蒲團來，請他們坐了。伊人進這病室之後，就感覺到一種悲哀的預感，好像有人在他的耳朵根前告訴說：
“可憐這一位年輕的女孩，已經沒有希望了。你何苦又要來看她，使她多一層煩擾。”
一見了她那被體熱蒸紅的清瘦的臉兒，和她那柔和悲寂的微笑，伊人更覺得難受，他紅了眼，好久不能說話，只聽她們三人輕輕地在那里說：…
