黃色的冬日來了，充滿厭煩。雪像一條磨得露出織紋的舊桌布，盡是窟窿，鋪在鐵銹色的大地上。桌布不夠大，有些屋頂沒有蓋住，這些屋頂就這樣屹立在那裏，黑色和棕色，木瓦頂和茅草頂，它們像一艘艘方舟，控制著像汪洋大海似的被煤煙熏黑的頂樓——漆黑的大教堂，布滿肋骨似的椽子、梁和桁梁——黑黢黢的冬天的陣風肺。每天的黎明揭示在黑暗中湧現出來的被夜晚的風充了氣的一排排新煙囪和煙囪管帽：魔鬼的管風琴的黑色的管子。掃煙囪的沒法擺脫那些烏鴉，它們在黃昏密密匝匝地待在教堂附近、長著黑色的沒有枯萎的樹葉的樹枝上，接著撲簌簌地飛到空中，又回到樹上去，每一只鳥緊貼在它自己那條樹枝的自己的位置上，要等到黎明才一大群、一大群地飛走，像一陣陣煤煙、一片片塵土，起伏不定和奇形怪狀，呱呱地叫個不停，叫得一道道黴黃色的亮光發黑。白天寒冷而叫人膩煩，硬邦邦的，像去年的面包。人開始用鈍刀切這種面包，毫無食欲，帶著懶洋洋的冷漠神情。 …
