既然說到世俗,則我這樣指名道姓,與中國世俗慣例終究不合,那麽講我自己吧。
我的小說從八四年發表後,有些反響,但都於我的感覺不契膩,就在於我發表過的小說回返了一些“世俗”樣貌,因為沒有“工農兵”氣,大家覺得新,於是覺得好,我在一開始的時候說過了,中國從近代開始,“新”的意思等於“好”,其實可能是“舊”味兒重聞,久違了才誤會了。…

說起來,我是讀“五四”新文學這一路長大的,只不過是被推到一個邊緣的角度讀,邊緣的原因我在講世俗的時候說過了,有些景觀也許倒看得更細致些。
“五四”的文學革命,有一個與當時的提倡相反的潛意識,意思就是雖然口號提倡文字要俗白,寫起來卻是將小說詩化。
我說過,中國歷來的世俗小說,是非詩化的,《紅樓夢》是將世俗小說入詩的意識的第一部小說。《金瓶梅詞話》裏的“詞”,以及“話本”小說的“開場詩”,並非是將詩意入小說。…

世俗世俗,就是活生生的多重實在,豈是好壞興亡所能剔分的?我前面說《紅樓夢》開篇提到厭煩才子佳人小人撥亂的套路,只不過曹雪芹人重言輕了,才子佳人小人撥亂自是一重世俗趣味,犯不上這麽對著幹,不知曹公在天之靈以為然否?
這樣一派明顯的中國古典小說的世俗景觀,近當代中國文學史和文學評論多不明寫,或者是這樣寫會顯得不革命沒學問?那可能就是故意不挑明。
這樣的結果,當然使人們羞於以世俗經驗與情感來讀小說,也就是胡適之先生說的“沒有價值”。…
