可有時它滿面紅光，像一個羞澀靦腆的大生物。有時它慢騰騰地，面帶緋色，一副生氣的樣子，慢慢地推著，頂著。有時她看不見它了，只有從上面的雲彩下發射出萬道金光。
她很走運。幾周過去了，盡管有時黎明有雲，或者有時下午灰暗，但是沒有一天沒有太陽。雖時值冬季，但多是陽光燦爛的日子。瘦小的野生藏紅花伸展著紫紅色的花朵，野生水仙則擎著星狀的飾物。
每天，她都到柏樹那兒去，在山腳下微黃的懸崖的圓丘上，掩蓋在仙人掌叢中。現在她更聰明更簡便了，腳穿便鞋，只身披一件鴿灰色的晨衣。這樣一來，在任何合適的隱秘地方，她頃刻間便可裸向太陽。而她不得已再穿上衣服的那一刻，她便覺得生活灰暗陰沈，自己也無足輕重了。…

但她發現了一個地方：一個伸向海面，暴露在陽光下，長滿了叫做霸王樹的巨大仙人掌的巖石峭壁。濃密的仙人掌叢中豎立著一棵柏樹，粗壯的樹幹，斜斜的樹梢，直插藍天。它聳立在那裏，像是位守望大海的哨兵；或者說是一支蠟燭，它巨大的火焰是光明對黑暗的訴說，長長的火舌沖向天空，卷舔著黑暗。
朱麗葉在柏樹旁坐下，脫掉衣服。彎彎曲曲的仙人掌在她周圍構成一道屏障，可怕卻也迷人。她對著太陽坐下，袒露胸膛，嘆息著。現在得奉獻自己了，她心裏頗感痛楚：不過她感到欣慰的是這畢竟不是人類的情人。
太陽在藍色的天空中徜徉，灑下道道光輝。她感覺到大海柔和的空氣愛撫著胸膛，看起來它們永遠不會成熟。可她幾乎沒有感覺到太陽，她胸中的欲望之果快要枯萎了。…
