費爾伯恩詩選:冬夜

蠟燭流淌,燃燒,

  我們感到溫暖舒服,

微弱地傳來風的狂吼,

  當它襲擊凍僵的樹木。

 

這間小屋的模糊的牆壁

  開始收縮,對著靈魂閃起眼睛;

深深的寂靜在幽暗中浮游:

  沒有響動,唯有木炭聲息輕輕。

 

在這隱蔽的生了火的地方,

  我們不知道顫抖的樹木和寒風,

我倆居住於獨自的空間,

  關閉在自己小小的無限之中。

 

這是我們的天地,在這兒

  愛情擁抱了歡樂的全部意象,

一切爭執在和平中獲得解決:

  這個時刻把生命的總和包囊。

 

因為時間是幽靈:這些燒紅的木炭,

 從前是一片森林,

現在我們收獲著太陽,

  從超越時間的黑暗的樹身;

 

然而這鮮花般燃燒的孤獨

  放射出時間竊來的春的光芒,

掩蔽的樹林中的紫羅蘭

  喚醒了木炭裡的藍色的火焰。

 

巨大的星辰會閃耀在屋頂;

  或許有人出現在牆外,

Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars

of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,

the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders

of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is

nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned

in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side

is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.
