“這個我一點也不反對，”威廉回答，“這是一種開拓新的未知領域的想法，很有見地，也很偉大。不過我還是請您再考慮考慮：這樣的事業只有依靠全體成員的共同努力才能實現。您到了那里，就會找到我所知道的那份家產。我的同事也有過同樣的打算，他們已經在那里定居。請您和他們聯合起來，他們都是有卓識遠見、聰明能幹、體格健壯的人。兩方面的力量合起來，事業會更順利些，發展會更快些。”
兩個朋友邊談邊走，不覺到了分手的地點。二人坐下來寫信，列納多把他的朋友介紹給上面提到的那個傑出人物；威廉向他的同事報告他的新朋友的情況，這封信自然地成了推薦信，他在信的結尾又講了講他跟雅諾談過的事，再一次闡明了自己希望盡快從“永遠流浪的猶太人”的苦惱狀態下解放出來的理由。
