康德爲什麽要設定共通感，在 1787 年 12 月底給賴因霍爾特的一封信中，他給予了說明。康德說：“我現正忙于鑒賞力的批判，在這里將發現另一種以前沒有發現的先天原則。心靈具有三種能力：認識能力、感覺快樂和不快的能力和欲望能力。我在對純粹的(理論的)理性批判里發現了第一種能力的先天原則，在對實踐的理性的批判里發現了第三種能力的先天原則。我現在試圖發現第二種能力的先天原則。”[23]…
