王官之學下移的同時，私學、私人著作開始從下層興起。據《孟子》記載，最早私人著述史書的是春秋末期的孔子，其《滕文公下》說：
世衰道微，邪說暴行有作，臣弒其君者有之，子弒其父者有之。孔子懼，作《春秋》。《春秋》，天子之事也，是故孔子曰：「知我者其惟《春秋》乎？罪我者其惟《春秋》乎？」
司馬遷也認為，孔子作有《春秋》，其《孔子世家》雲：
（孔子）乃因史記作《春秋》……約其文辭而指博。故昊楚之君自稱王，而《春秋》貶之曰「子」；踐土之會實召周天子，而《春秋》諱之曰「天王狩於河陽」：推此類以繩當世。貶損之義，後有王者舉而開之。《春秋》之義行，則天下亂臣賊子懼焉。…

在宗廟祭祀神靈的活動中，君臣上下同聽「雅」、「頌」之聲，便「莫不和敬」，鄉裡長少同聽之，便「莫不和順」。史詩在協調社會等級次序、維護血緣族團群體安定團結方面所發揮的巨大作用，由此可見。
（五）史詩的精神原則
在宗教史詩時代，初民們堅信神靈是公正不偏，能夠揚善懲惡的。《墨子·明鬼》：「古聖王必以鬼神為賞賢而罰暴。」「鬼神之所賞，無小必賞之；鬼神之所罰，無大必罰之。」《楚辭·離騷》：「皇天無私阿兮，覽民德焉錯（措）輔」。又，《尚書》三篇記載商王盤庚之言曰：
予告汝於難，若射之有志。…
