使作物增產的方法很多，改良品種是其中重要措施之一。我曾聽到不少朋友講起：水稻容易倒伏，往往因此減產。公社裡急需稈強、穗大的品種。因此我們必須想辦法，把稻種改造得稈子堅強些，使它不容易倒伏才是。
我們到稻田裡去觀察一下，就可發現，並不是所有的稻株一律要倒伏的，而是有些倒伏得厲害些，有些不大倒伏；這些並非由於穗輕而小，而是稈子比較硬些。那麼可用選擇方法，把稈子較硬的稻子選取來，明年把這種子下種，不要與別的種子混雜。經過幾代的選擇，很可能獲得稈子較硬、不易倒伏的優良品種的。選擇法是一種行之有效的方法。…
