奧威爾·沒有黑暗的地方他憑直覺知道，在這樣的地方，燈光是永遠不會熄滅的。這是個沒有黑暗的地方：他現在明白了為什麽奧勃良似乎理會這個比喻。在友愛部里沒有窗戶。他的牢房可能位於大樓的中央，也可能靠著外墻；可能在地下十層，也可能在地上三十層。他在心里想像著這一個地方，要想根據自己身體的感覺來斷定，究竟高高地在空中，還是深深地在地下。（喬治·奧威爾《1984》【74】）
