就餐速度的加快在農場中亦有所反映。化學肥料和殺蟲劑、集約餵養、抗生素消化增強劑、生長激素、人工飼養、轉基因等，人類掌握的每一種科學技術都被採用到減少成本、提高產量、提高牲畜與莊稼生長發育速度上來。兩個世紀以前，飼養豬平均要花費5年才能達到體重130磅；而如今，只需6個月就可達到220磅，在還沒有換乳牙前就已被屠宰。北美的鮭魚、大馬哈魚經過轉基因處理後，比通常的平均生長速度快四至六倍。小土地所有者讓位於工廠農場，後者生產出更快、更便宜、更多的標準化食物。
當我們的祖先遷移到城市並失去了與土地的聯系後，他們愛上了快速時代的快餐。越是加工的，越方便，就越好。20世紀50年代的餐館菜單上，罐頭湯佔據首要地位。在美國連鎖店"泰德30種"，用餐者在桌邊的微波爐烹制冷凍食物。與此同時，這家大型快餐連鎖餐館開始實施批量生產，其最終結果是給我們帶來每隻價格僅為99美分的漢堡。…
