互文性理論在談及分析對象時，使用了文本（Теxt）這一術語。這是互文性理論不可缺少的概念之一。“互文性”詞彙本身就是以此爲基礎構成的。從詞源上看，text 源自拉丁語 textus ，指織物，也指編織，聯系、結合。從這個角度講，文本也暗含了材料引用的過程。而從文本概念的內涵看，早期的文本是文獻學術語，用來指原文。之後結構主義的出現擴大了文本的範圍。比利時哲學家布洛克曼（J. M. Broekman）在《結構主義：莫斯科—布拉格—巴黎》一書中寫道，“直到結構主義出現後，他們的著作（馬克思、黑格爾等）才真正成爲文本。”（布洛克曼 1986：94）1971 年，羅蘭•巴特在《從作品到文本》
