“不，”他說。“那是我用一把溫切斯特45－70型長槍在懷俄明的開放區打的。”
“這麽說你還會用長槍，挺了不起咧？”約翰先生說。他探頭朝櫃臺下望了望。”一雙腳也不小。你出來追捕娃娃們，也用得著這麽大的槍？”
“你說‘娃娃’還帶個‘們’字，什麽意思？”那個南邊來的人說。他來了個先下手為強。
“我指的就是你要找的那個娃娃。”
“你明明還帶了個'們'字，”那個南邊來的人說。…

尼克頭枕背包躺了下來，妹妹也在他身邊躺下，把腦袋靠在他肩頭上。
“我才不回去呢，尼基，除非你叫我走，”她說。“我可不願意跟你吵架。答應我咱們決不吵架，好嗎？”
“好，答應你。”
“我再也不提特蘿迪了。”
“去她的特蘿迪！”
“我要盡量幫著你，給你做個好夥伴。”…
