布羅茨基：在一間半房子裏
一間半房子（如果這種空間單位在英語裏還有意義的話），我們仨住在裏面，房裏鋪著鑲木地板，我媽強烈反對他家裏的男人，尤其是我，穿著襪子走動在地板上。她堅決要求我們時時穿上鞋子或拖鞋，她告誡我，這會讓她想起一種古老的俄羅斯迷信；那是一個不祥的預兆，她會說，它可能預示著家裏要死人。
當然，也許她只是認為這種習慣不文明，象那些普通的壞習慣一樣。男人的腳散發著臭味，而那個時代還沒有除臭劑。不過我想，一個人確實很容易滑倒在擦亮的鑲木地板上，尤其是穿著羊毛襪子時。如果一個人年老體弱，後果可能是不幸的。鑲木地板與木、土等有密切關系，因此我進一步想到生活在同一個城市裏的近親遠戚腳下的地…
